Work is underway for the 2011 holiday season. If you're interested in helping, please contact our office at 443-4880, there's much to do and we need your support.
A big thank you to all of the businesses who will be collected toys, to our sponsors who donated cash to the cause and to our volunteers who picked up, sorted and distributed over 8,000 toys and stocking stuffers. Each of you helped bring the joy of Christmas to 3,900 children in Humboldt County in 2010. There were many times we questioned how we would be able to meet this area's needs and once again, the amazing generosity of this community pulled through and we exceeded our goals - THANK YOU!
Approximately 40% of our toys come from the collection boxes placed throughout the community. The remaining 60% are purchased with funds collected from sponsors and individuals. Both fundraising and business support are key to the success of this program.
Once again this year we will also be providing toys to Trinity County. We are excited at the opportunity to combine efforts with our neighbors to the east in helping to spread the Toys for Tots spirit into their region.
For 2011, we are anticipating serving over 4,800 children in the two counties combined. That translates to 9,600 toys plus stocking stuffers.
The way the Toys for Tots program works is any child who receives free or reduced price lunch at school is automatically eligible. Parents receive a voucher from their school which is good for two age appropriate toys per child from the program. Families with children not of school age can call the Toys for Tots phone number 707.443.4880 ( open Monday through Friday from 9am. to 5pm.), and enroll over the phone. Distribution days are scheduled just before Christmas and the families bring their voucher(s) to the distribution day and shop with the help of a volunteer for their children's toys.
These children will wake up Christmas morning to presents under the tree. Their parents will feel gratitude at being able to give their children the magic of Christmas.
In 2010, Toys for Tots had a major impact on the local economy. We estimate that over $85,000 was spent by the community for toys purchased / donated to Toys for Tots. This is a win / win for the local economy and local families in need.
Here's looking toward a successful 2011 Toys for Tots season! Many blessings to you and yours.
Best,
Gregg Gardiner
